TURNING WORLD
ORCHESTRA
THE NAME
The word "orchestra"
suggest the collaborative process, and one which we
value highly. Turning World Orchestra has invited
musicians from diverse disciplines to work together
in developing a new sound.
"Turning world" is
putting the world on stage and reflecting the
changes in the way we see the world, its
connectedness - always turning; ever evolving.
By using the fabric of
rock and pop rhythms that are familiar to western
ears and painting them with the colors of
instruments from diverse corners of the world, we
create a new sound. A sound that represents a true
global village. The sounds of the sitar and tabla
are brought into a wider world of sound; the mbira
finds it's place in western melodies; the bagpipes
no longer relegated to the Highlands, but are now
essential to the powerhouse ballad.
The "Global village
genre" of music we are creating connects,
reinterprets and translates music to make it
accessible to audiences anywhere in the world.
One world. One music.
One stage.
THE SONGS
We only select songs
that have a message relevant to this century and the
various humanitarian crises and situations we are
all faced with now. We choose songs with a strong
message: Springsteen's "World's Apart" is a love
song across a cultural divide and a message for how
similar we can be.. if only....
Emerson Lake and
Palmer's "Farewell to Arms" is an epic poem about
the human cost of war and a plea to see it all end;
Arno Carstens "Cooler Lifestyles" encourages an
awareness of climate change.... inspired, rocking
and relevant songs we're proud to present in a
unique way.
Turning World Orchestra
takes the original, strips it to the core, and
rebuilds it in a way that honors the emotional
message while renewing it for an audience regardless
of their location in the world. A listener in Mumbai
may not be familiar with Emmylou Harris, but they
are familiar with the sarod and tabla used to bring
the song to them in a way common western instruments
might not.
THE PLAYERS
To be a part of Turning
World Orchestra requires a musician to literally
step out of the comfort zone of their instrument's
tradition. The player needs to be able to "think
outside the box" of their usual genre, to be
challenged and most importantly, enjoy the
collaborative process. Being a part of this group
means being innovative, original, flexible and have
a deep desire to have fun!
We're always open to
including talented players, so if you think you have
what it takes, get in touch!
VISUAL PERFORMANCE
The live production
that is Turning World Orchestra includes some
incredible candy for your eyes. Graphics and videos
to enhance the message of the songs, as well as
dancers from a variety of world disciplines. We have
the incredible whirling dervishes, African styles
from West and South of the continent, Japanese Butoh,
bellydancing and more. It all adds up to an
audio-visual feast that will bring you to your feet
dancing, and leave you emotionally moved as you
leave, pondering the significance of the songs.
